Concept & Design
Recently I read an article stating that all biological entities on earth are a composite of species, which live, develop and evolve together—there are no individuals and we are all symbioses. This concept of symbiotic life as a norm, rather than exception is slowly changing the way we interpret the world and I wanted to explore those ideas.
The shape of Emergence is reminiscent of corals or lichen, possibly most well-known symbiotic organisms. I like using corals as part of my visual language as they are intriguing and defy the simple categories that most people use to understand living things.
Coral reefs are the largest structures of biological origin on Earth. Although they occupy less than 0.1% of earth's upper oceans, they provide the habitat for about 25% of the globe's marine species. They are also considered to be the one of the most sensitive ecosystems to global heating of the oceans. Think about it, the habitat of the 25% of the marine species is slowly dying. As the algae part of the coral system is abandoning too warm environment, corals are losing their vibrant colours and slowly dying. The world has lost nearly 20 percent of its coral reefs, with many more reefs under threat today. And we humans are largely responsible for that loss.
