Existence

2025
70cm (width) × 70cm (depth) × 230cm (height)
Concept & Design

Composed of highly textured segments stacked upon one another, the work captures a sense of organic movement and upward growth, each piece contributing to a greater whole. The predominantly white and pale palette evokes sun-bleached surfaces and coral skeletons, serving as a poignant meditation on impermanence. These ghostly tones remind us of bleached coral reefs and the fragile ecosystems under threat, subtly addressing the deterioration of life and the environmental challenges facing our planet.

Construction
This is the first time that the starting point is a clay model, sliced and scaled up using paper and cardboard. Each of the 17 components are created by adding extruded elements to a clay slab, working up side down.
Texture is achieved by adding wheel thrown elements, drawing lines, poking holes and adding porcelain slip at the leather-hard stage—a time-sensitive process where timing is everything: too wet and the texture runs; too dry and it flakes away.

Firing & Installation
Existence was glazed (sprayed & brushed) and fired to 1220 degrees celsius.
The sculpture's foundation—a concrete base embedded with metal rods, is coloured with iron oxide, resembling rammed earth It provides essential stability while remaining concealed, much like the hidden systems that sustain life itself. This invisible structure allows the porcelain segments to appear as though they float and grow organically, unencumbered by their structural reality.
